Climbing Kilimanjaro: Which Route Is Right For You?

A comprehensive comparison of the Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, and Rongai routes to help you choose the best trail for your summit success.

Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 meters above the East African plains. Choosing the right route is one of the most critical decisions for your summit safety and success. ### Machame Route (6-7 Days) Known as the 'Whiskey Route,' Machame is popular for its varied terrain, dramatic views, and excellent acclimatization profile ('climb high, sleep low'). Recommended for reasonably fit trekkers. ### Lemosho Route (7-8 Days) Approaching from the west, Lemosho offers pristine wilderness, remote scenery, and the highest summit success rates due to its gradual ascent profile. ### Marangu Route (5-6 Days) Known as the 'Coca-Cola Route,' Marangu features communal A-frame dormitory huts instead of tents. It is a straight up-and-down trail with a lower acclimatization success rate on the 5-day version. ### Safety First on Kilimanjaro Gibaco provides licensed guides, twice-daily pulse oximeter monitoring, emergency medical oxygen, and high guide-to-client ratios.
